quote
A hachimaki (鉢巻)
is a stylized headband (bandanna, bandana) in Japanese culture, usually made of red or white cloth, worn as a symbol of perseverance or effort by the wearer. These are worn on many occasions, for example, by sports spectators, by women giving birth, students in cram school, office workers, expert tradesmen taking pride in their work, bōsōzoku (teen biker gangs) and even rioters. Japanese competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi wore a hachimaki for the Nathan's hotdog eating competition.
They are generally decorated with inspirational slogans, like
(Nippon Ichi, "the best of Japan" or "Japan's best"), but most typically with the rising sun motif.
The historical origin of hachimaki is uncertain. One theory links the cloth to those worn by early religious ascetics. Another theory states that they originated in headbands worn by samurai that kept their helmets on, to absorb perspiration, and keep hair out of their eyes.
"Hachimaki" translates as "helmet-scarf."
Perhaps the most infamous usage of the hachimaki was by the kamikaze pilots toward the end of World War II. Kamikaze pilots would frequently don a hachimaki, usually with the kanji characters 神風 ("Kamikaze") before flying to their deaths. The hachimaki was also worn by Daniel, in the famous film "Karate Kid".

Because this shrine lets you bring your pets along for hatsumode, you’ll not only see cats and dogs there, but also rabbits, turtles, ferrets, hamsters, and even iguanas. While you are there, you can pray for the health and long life of your pet, and pick up an omamori (charm) to protect them from injury and illness.
All sorts of charms are on offer. The ‘Bandana Omamori’ can be tied easily around the neck or leg of your pet, and it comes in red, blue and yellow, as well as a new version with an arabesque pattern.
The ‘Pet no Horifuda Omamori’ペットの彫り札お守り lets you have your name, your pet’s name, and your wish for your pet carved onto the charm itself.

Yamagata
Fukushima Miharu Hariko
Himeji Hariko
Hyogo Inabata

Shiga
Fukuoka
Kagawa, Takamatsu hariko
Hiroshima : Tsuneishi Hariko

Kyoto Fushimi Ningyo
Okayama, Kurashiki hariko
Saitama Kasukabe hariko

Papermachee Dolls
The most important of the Aizu Papermachee Dolls is the Red Oxen, Akabeko. The red color is auspicious for warding off illnesses. Many papermachee dolls of the Aizu area are called "Red Things" (akamono) for this reason. Red things are also good luck symbols for childrearing.

lion dancers at the solstice
They have a history of more than 500 years.
They represent a dance for good luck for soldiers before they had to go to battle.
They also bring good health and ward off evil. The most important of these battles was the Boshin Senso in 1868, a civil war between Tokugawa loyal forces and the new Meiji government troups.
The loyal samurai of Aizu were famous for this last battle.

Aizu Papier-Mache dolls
The craft of 'hariko' (papier-mache) is also called 'harinuki' or 'haribote' and was brought to Japan from China.
During the Muromachi period, papier-mache dog figures were popular among the nobility. By the Edo period, there were many paper-production centers all over Japan. Many kinds of papier-mache toys and good-luck figures were made around Japan, with characteristics unique to each region.
In the Edo period, there was little chance for exchange both within and outside the country, owing to Japan's long period of isolation. So, people produced toys reflecting each region's lifestyle or beliefs.
Papier-mache toys, such as these, have been called 'local toys' since the early Taisho period. Most local toys are to wish for health to a growing child, good luck, prosperity in business or abundant harvest.
It is said that Aizu papier-mache developed as an additional source of income for samurai in the Aizu Domain; the red cow toy is especially famous. There is something lovely about the way these little red cows shake their heads.

The Maneki Neko (招き猫, literally "Beckoning Cat"; also known as Welcoming Cat, Lucky Cat, Money cat or Fortune Cat) is a common Japanese sculpture, often made of porcelain or ceramic, which is believed to bring good luck to the owner. The sculpture depicts a cat (traditionally a Japanese Bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed—many times at the entrance—in shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and other businesses.
Some of the sculptures are electric or battery-powered and have a slow-moving paw beckoning. In the design of the sculptures, a raised right paw supposedly attracts money, while a raised left paw attracts customers.

Tokyo temple’s beckoning cats keep visitors purring in
by Yoshiaki Miura
A five-minute walk from Miyanosaka Station on the Tokyu Setagaya Line, Gotokuji Temple in Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward offers a fun sight for visitors.
By a path leading to the main temple sit a huge number of bright white cat figures placed around a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. Many tourists visit just to take photos.
These are maneki neko, beckoning cats, figures that are believed to bring good luck and are said to have originated at the temple.
Legend has it that during the Edo Period, a chief priest at the temple, had a cat he cared for very much. One day, feudal lord Ii Naotaka passed by with his servants and saw the cat, which appeared to be waving at him to come inside.
Curious, they entered and were greeted by the priest. As the priest served them tea and offered a sermon, a thunderstorm broke outside.
Grateful to the cat and the priest, Ii later donated rice crops and land to the then-poor temple, elevating it to prosperity. The temple became a designated cemetery for the Ii family, whose members served in central roles in the Tokugawa shogunate.
Today, the cats are a symbol of the area. Many maneki neko goods are available in local shops, and feline figures dotted around the neighborhood make it a lovely place to walk.

.. .. .. .. .. Legend of the Old Woman in "Imado"
In the last part of Edo period (19th century), there was a old woman who lived in Imado, eastern part of Tokyo. Though she had kept a pet cat, her extreme poverty did not allow her to keep it any more. So she told her cat, "I'm sorry I have to abandon you under this poor situation".
On that night, the cat appeared in her dream and told her,
"Please make my image in clay.
It will surely bring a good luck to you".
When the old woman made the cat's image in clay following to her dream, guest visited her wishing to buy it. The more the old woman made the cat's images, the more guests visited her to buy them, and she could save money.
The cat's image in clay which relieved her from poverty was the origin of Manekineko.
