hariko 張子 / 張り子 papermachee dolls
Papier Mâché Doll - Papiermaché {n}
Hariko 張子 Papermache Dolls
are probably the most common of all the Daruma dolls.
Here is a quote from an article about the development of Daruma dolls in Japan:
From the Tumbler Doll (okiagari koboshi) to the
Tumbler Daruma (okiagari Daruma 起き上がりだるま)
After the Period of the Warring States Japan reached a time of 300 years of peace under the Tokugawa regime. The Tumbler Dolls of papermachee first made in Kyoto, soon
reached the new capital of Edo. The inventive townspeople of Edo painted a big black beard on the face of the old man and a visiting priest came to say: "Well, if this is not the face of Daruma Daishi himself!" The red robe was the traditional garb of a priest.
Getting up after falling down was taken as a wish getting better for an ill person. It was also said that the stark red colour would ward off smallpox, so the red tumbler doll of Daruma would be the best present for a sick child. This one blessing was soon followed by others and developed into "Falling down seven times, getting up eight times"
(nanakorobi yaoki 七転びやおき), turning into a blessing for many generations of the family line, good business and others.
Thus Daruma got a firm place in the heart of the Japanese people and seemd to work for the good of people with six heads and six arms. The faith in him grew steadily and soon the dolls were sold at the New Years fairs at many local temples and the tradition to paint one eye for a wish started. You had to buy a new one every year, so the tradition expanded and we have to thank the founder of the Zen Sect for all of this.

In Edo many papermachee dolls were made with a wiggling head.
The dolls were also called
harinuki 張り貫き and spread widely in the mid-Edo period.
Many dolls were made with a special wish for the growth of healthy children and were sold at temples and shrines as amulets.
Wet 和紙 washi paper sheets are pasted in layers on a mold. The glue (niwaka にわか) is made from natural material.
The the mold is removed after drying. So the dolls are empty inside and not as heavy as their size suggests.
The washi paper was mostly used paper and scraps.
Once the forms are dried and stiff, they usually get a grounding of white with gofun 胡粉and can then be painted in all colors.

During the Edo period travel along the river Abukumagawa 阿武隈川 was frequent and together with the tax rice Daruma dolls were shipped around.
quote
The Abukuma River (阿武隈川, Abukuma-gawa),
with a length of 234 km, is the second longest river in the Tōhoku region of Japan and the 6th longest river in Japan. It runs through Fukushima Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture, rising from springs in the peaks of the Nasu mountains, collecting water from tributaries leaving the Ōu Mountains and the Abukuma Highlands (阿武隈高地, Abukuma-kōchi), then emptying into the Pacific Ocean as a major river.
The Abukuma River flows north through Fukushima Prefecture's Nakadōri region, past the cities of Shirakawa, Sukagawa, Kōriyama, Nihonmatsu and Fukushima. The portion of the river flowing between Nihonmatsu and Fukushima forms a deep ravine called Hōrai-kyō (蓬莱峡).

The famous poet Io Sogi (Soogi, Sougi 飯尾宗祇 いいおそうぎ) on his way to a poetry meeting for linked verse in Northern Japan met a poor girl here selling cotton. 那珂湊 津波
The scenes of destruction were especially frightening because they were far from the worst-hit areas. Nakaminato is on the southern edge of the worst devastation from the 8.9-magnitude quake and the tsunami it spawned, which swept away whole villages farther north. Nakaminato sits about 155 miles south of Sendai, the city that bore much of the brunt of the tsunami.
Before the shaking and the waves hit, Nakaminato’s buildings had a worn-out look; the town had been left behind by the country’s industrial buildup and by the young people who headed for thriving cities. The mostly aging population made its living mainly from fishing; the heart of the community was a fishing co-op on the waterfront.

Kooshuu is the old name of Yamanashi Province.
Takeda Shingen was a warlord there during turbulent times before the Edo Bakufu government was formed. Up to our times he is honored with this Daruma Doll.
He has the eyes painted in a special way below the eyebrows so when you put him high up on the Gods Shelf in the home (kamidana) he will look down on you and grant your wishes (Shitami Daruma).
The dolls are also called “Shitami Daruma” or “Yokozawa Daruma” corresponding to the villages where they are made.

Takeda Shingen was the eldest son of the aggressive warlord Takeda Nobutora (1493-1573).
He was Lord of Shinano and Kai Provinces. He was a preeminent daimyo or feudal lord with military prestige who sought for the control of Japan in the late stage of Sengoku or "warring states" period.
He was born Takeda Tarō (Katsuchiyo), but was later given the formal name of Takeda Harunobu.
Shingen is sometimes referred to as "The Tiger of Kai" for his martial prowess on the battlefield. His primary rival, Uesugi Kenshin, was often called "The Dragon of Echigo" or also "The Tiger of Echigo Province". In Chinese mythology, the dragon and the tiger have always been bitter rivals who try to defeat one another, but they always fight to a draw.

Erin-ji 恵林寺 is a quiet Zen temple surrounded by the Yamanashi mountains. It was built in 1330, when Nikaidō Sadafuji the military governor of the Kai-no-kuni administration asked the Zen priest and garden designer Musō Soseki (夢窓 疎石), also known as Musō Kokushi, to found the temple.
At that time, it was a Rinzai Zen temple of the Engaku-ji branch. It was destroyed in the Ōnin war (1467-77), but rebuilt when the Takeda samurai clan appointed it to be their family temple. In 1541, it changed to be a temple of the Myōshin-ji branch of the Rinzai school. The famous daimyo Takeda Shingen (武田 信玄) is buried here.

Ainu (アイヌ) (also called Ezo in historical texts) are an ethnic group indigenous to Hokkaidō, the Kuril Islands, and much of Sakhalin. There are most likely over 150,000 Ainu today; however the exact figure is not known as many Ainu hide their origin due to racial issues in Japan. In many cases, surviving Ainu may not be even aware of their ancestry, as their parents and grandparents kept their descent private in order to protect their children from social problems.
Their most widely known ethnonym is derived from the word aynu, which means "human" (particularly as opposed to kamuy, divine beings) in the Hokkaidō dialects of the Ainu language; Emishi, Ezo or Yezo (蝦夷) are Japanese terms, which are believed to derive from the ancestral form of the modern Sakhalin Ainu word enciw or enju, also meaning "human". The term Utari (ウタリ) (meaning "comrade" in Ainu) is now preferred by some members of this minority.

Japan to formally recognize Ainu as indigenous people
Both houses of the Diet unanimously approved a resolution on Friday urging the government to officially recognize Ainu as indigenous people.
The House of Councillors
and the House of Representatives voted in favor of the resolution at their respective plenary sessions on Friday.
On behalf of the executive branch of the government,
Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura declared that Japan will formally recognize Ainu as indigenous people.
The government is set to establish a panel on Ainu to consider their indigenous rights after it officially recognizes them as indigenous people.
The move will likely represent
a drastic change in Japan's policy of not recognizing Ainu's indigenous rights and putting top priority to the development of Hokkaido where a large population of Ainu has been concentrated since the Meiji Era.

The inscription reads:

There seems to be pun on 縁寿 Enju and 槐 Enju tree.
This tree grows widely in Hokkaido.
Styphnolobium japonicum (L.) Schott, the Pagoda Tree
(Chinese Scholar, Japanese pagodatree; syn. Sophora japonica)
is a species of small tree or shrub in the subfamily Faboideae of the pea family Fabaceae.
The tree is is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine.
It has abortifacient, antibacterial, anticholesterolemic, antiinflammatory, antispasmodic, diuretic, emetic, emollient, febrifuge, hypotensive, purgative, styptic, and tonic properties.
The Chinese character for the tree (槐) is composed of the parts for
木 ("wood") and 鬼 ("demon").
In folklore, it is said that a cowherd once built a home out of this species of tree, and within a month his entire family was suddenly found dead, with no signs of foul play. It was therefore believed that demons are drawn to this tree and it is therefore not appropriate to use its wood to build homes. In addition, in the wild, other species of trees rarely grow near it.
